Opportunity for Nicaraguan Tourism SMEs

Co-Invierto announced the second round of the program which will benefit some 220 tourism SMEs.

Ian Colonel, project manager, said that for this second call $ 600 000 are available, funded by the Dutch government and Grupo Pellas.

Laprensa.com.ni states "The Co-Invierto program is to provide financial resources to small and medium tourism enterprises in order to improve the quality of services they offer. This program is part of the Ruta Triángulo del Sur."

Why do SMEs fail?

Over 50% of SMEs fail before they are three years old, 90% are no more than five years old and only 10% survive.

In the case of Nicaragua the subject is sensitive, "because 60 percent of its business backbone is made up of micro, small and medium enterprises, which account for 40 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), estimated at more than six billion dollars.

Nicaragua Launches Tourism Campaign

The campaign, with a $ 7.2 million investment, is to support Ometepe's tourist related MSMEs and agritourism farms.

The project will begin next January and will start with the refurbishment of the first farms of the 90 included on the project. These will be ready to welcome tourists by May 2011.

$3.6 Million for Nicaraguan Tourism SMEs

July 2009

Some 500 micro, small and medium enterprises from the tourism area will be trained on business management over the next three years.

The program is called Tourism Development in South West Nicaragua, and is funded by the Dutch government and the "Centro Empresarial Pellas" Foundation. 500 SMEs will be chosen to participate, among hotels, restaurants, food suppliers, tour operators and agricultural tourism.
