Opportunities in Glass Recycling

Nicaragua does not recycle its discarded glass, and the little that is collected is exported to three recycling plants in other Central American countries.

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "If there was a glass processing plant in Nicaragua, without a doubt the number of collectors would multiply and their income would improve, but for now the amount of material collected for selling at the three factories operating in Central America, is only 2.457 metric tons per year, the lowest of all countries on the isthmus. "

Regionally, it is Grupo vidriero Centroamericano Group who dominants glass recycling, as the heir of Vigua, created in Guatemala in 1964, and Vicesa in Costa Rica and Vipasa in Panama, who joined them in 2006.

Businesses in the sector have complained about lack of support from municipal authorities, in principle those responsible for waste treatment, and lack of effective standards for solid waste management.

The price per quintal of glass suitable for recycling oscillates between $3 and $5, and between$30 to $50 or more per ton.
