Occupational Safety for Construction

In Guatemala, a guide is proposed to establish best practices in occupational safety and health for companies in the construction sector.

Monday, March 25, 2019

The Guatemalan Ministry of Labor and Social Security (Mintrab) and the Guatemalan Chamber of Construction (CGC), agreed to work together to exchange knowledge and experiences to strengthen standards in legislation, promotion of formality, labor inclusion, as well as the issue of Occupational Health and Safety, reported the Guatemalan government.

Gabriel Aguilera, Minister of Labor, told Elperiodico.com.gt that "... this guide will be useful because it condenses the regulations applicable to the sector, since it is framed in Governmental Agreement 229-2014 and its reforms, of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. It is important to generate a culture of health and safety of the workers, since it protects them and improves the productivity of the companies."

Lilian Gonzalez, representative of the Guatemalan Institute of Social Security (IGSS), explained that "... they periodically learn about occupational accidents that could have been prevented, although she did not specify statistics. She added that this shows that many workers face dangerous working conditions in the country."

The article adds that "... The president of the chamber, Javier Ruiz said an agreement was also signed with Mintrab to promote compliance with labor regulations."
