A press release from the Tourism Authority of Panama reads:
The north terminal at Tocumen International Airport has been formally opened, a project which was developed with an investment of $100 million, as part of the expansion and remodeling of the main air terminal in Panama.
This terminal, which adds 12 new gates and a 50% increase in passenger traffic, will position Tocumen International Airport as one of the most modern in the region.
The expansion and remodeling program of the airport is in response to increased demand by visitors coming to Panama.
With an investment of $100 million, the construction company will deliver the work between 15th and 20th January.
Juan Carlos Pino, manager of Tocumen SA, told media that the new areas will be used immediately.
"Pino explained that operations will be carried out in only two of the 12 new boarding gates and part of the operational area, where is baggage moved and aircraft re-fuelled and re-stocked with food supplies.
The new terminal will be ready in September and will increase airport capacity by 50%.
It will have 12 new boarding gates and will be designed to receive any type of aircraft.
"Once the expansion is operating, the Tocumen administration will begin the process of constructing the southern terminal, which would add about 20 additional gates," states the article in Prensa.com.
The project to expand the main airport of Panama is 18% ready; it is scheduled to be ready on the second half of 2010.
When the works are finished, Tocumen International Airport will be capable of attending 10 million passengers a year, a 100% increase over its current transit of 4.7 million passengers.
