No agreement on minimum wages in Guatemala

The National Center for Economic Investigation (CIEN) is opposed to an increase in minimum wages for 2009, just as the private sector has expressed, and has presented other long term alternatives.

In the presentation of the Minimum Wages Policy in Guatemala, the CIEN proposed other mechanisms so that workers can improve their income and has move away from the position that the productive sector has manifested for years.

Lisardo Bolaños, CIEN analist, explained that even though the topic is complex and complicated, the realities for measuring labor activities by productivity are different.

The business sector proposes an increase of 2%, while employee representatives are asking for 47%.

The current minimum wage is Q62, 5 ($7.95) per day, for the export and maquila sectors and Q65 ($8.27) per day for agricultural and nonagricultural sectors.

The final debate is scheduled for tomorrow, December 7 and if a consensus can not reached, the President will make the final decision.

8% Wage Increase in El Salvador

April 2011

The Government, private enterprise and workers agreed to a minimum wage increase of 8% for all sectors.

The National Minimum Wage Council is a body under the Ministry of Labour, and is composed of seven members, two of which represent the employment sector, two the workforce and three represent the government sector.

Honduran companies present legal action against minimum salary

January 2009

The National Association of Industrial Companies announced today that they will present a constitutional suit against the executive decree that established the new minimum salary.

Proces Digital reports: "ANDI has also called for a general strike next week that it is naming "a day without a company."
