Nicaragua to end 2008 with 18% inflation

According to the latest report on inflation published by the BCN, at the end of October the accumulated inflation was at 13.95% compared to 10.71% in 2007.

The institution explain that the downward trend in inflation continues, and that for the first time this year there was a slight decrease of 0.02%. The Central Bank acknowledges that the drop in the price of oil was what caused the reduction in the rate of inflation in October, while food and beverages and the furnishing and maintenance of homes continued to rise.

"The inter-annual variation up to the end of September 2008 is the highest recorded in the last 10 years," INEC declared in a press release comparing the figure for the period from October 2007 to September 2008; it was at 9.43% in the previous period.

The rising trend in price of the Basic Food Basket was detained this month mainly because the price of food started to stabilize due to the end of the harvest of grains and vegetables, as well as the slight drop in the price of fertilizers, said Miguel Corleto, head of the Statistics and Census Bureau (DIGESTYC).
