Nicaragua to Host Cup of Excellence

Thirty-two judges from different countries will come together until May 22 in Nicaragua to select the best coffee at the Cup of Excellence competition.

The final stage will take place in Estelí, where participating coffees will be valued in the search for potential buyers, and the best coffee in Nicaragua will be selected. reported the statements of the president of the Specialty Coffee Association, ACEN, José Barcenas, who stated: "This competition of great importance for the economic development of our country to show the great potential of Nicaraguan specialty coffee specialty to the world."

Cup of Excellence Coffee Contest Begins in Nicaragua

On March 10th organizers started receiving samples to participate in the 2011 competition.

Of the samples submitted, national judges will select 150 which will continue the process.

During the first few days of April, an international jury will select the best which will participate in an electronic auction held on May 31st.

Nicaragua: Excellence Cup Enters Final Stretch

50 specialty coffees will compete to be awarded as the country’s best, at the final stage of the Excellence Cup contest.

They were selected by a jury of national experts on April 23, from 119 samples.

“90% of the varieties which qualified for the final originate in the ‘Nueva Segovia’ region”, reported “This week, an international jury will select the country’s best coffee”.

Between April 23 and 29, 20 international judges will meet in Nicaragua to choose the country's finest coffee at a contest called “Excellence Cup”.

National judges are analyzing 60 coffee samples to select the best 30. These will participate in the contest, which will take place in the coffee growing area of Ocotal.

The price, achieved in the Cup of Excellence auction in Nicaragua, beat those achieved in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Honduras.

The special 100 pounds of coffee produced by Maria Amparo Castellano was sold in the Cup of Excellence 2009’s electronic auction in Nicaragua for $3,105 per 100 pounds.
