Nicaragua: Prices for Renewable Energy

From May 26 a new pricing benchmark will come into effect for the development of energy generation using renewable sources.

The information published on the website of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Nicaragua indicates prices in $ per MWh as a reference for the development of renewable projects.

Investment in Clean Energy Becomes Less attractive

The drop in oil prices has made clean energy less profitable, going from 30%, in previous years to 12%.

The approval of the General Electricity Law passed in Guatemala ten years ago encouraged a boom in the generation and transmission of electricity in the country, including from renewable sources. In the past five years, 28 new hydropower stations of over 5 MW were set up.

It has been estimated that in the next six years more than 900 MW of additional power will be generated from renewable sources.

A study produced in conjunction with American Cooperation Agency (USAID) revealed that "... from this year until 2021 it is expected that generation capacity will grow by 145.7 MW in energ from hydropower sources, by 102 MW from geothermal sources and 380 MW using natural gas.

This was admitted by the director of development of renewable energy at the National Energy Council (CNE), Mario Rodriguez, who presented to representatives of the electricity sector the content of a Master Plan for Development of Renewable Energy.
