Nicaragua: Optimism Over Cruise Season

For the 2017-2018 season, the arrival of 165,000 tourists on board 120 cruise ships is expected, which will represent an increase of 33% over the previous period.

Seventy-five percent of the tourists who arrived on cruises in the 2015-2016 season were over 45 years old, while those over 65 represented 34% of the total, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Institute. These figures reflect the characteristics of senior citizens arriving in Costa Rica, who require different services and infrastructure from other tourists, both when arriving at the port and during their stay in the country.

45 cruise ships are expected to arrive during the 2015/16 season, 21% more than in the previous season, when 37 boats arrived to the country.

The two ports where cruise ships will dock are Puerto Corinto and San Juan del Sur, and they will start arriving from October 2015 to May 2016.

The increase in cruise ship arrivals was partly due to the influenza A outbreak in Mexico because 6 cruises ships were diverted to Nicaragua.

The goal of the Nicaraguan Association of Tourism (ANTUR) for the 2008-2009 Season was 54 cruise ships and 60 arrived in Nicaraguan ports.
