Nicaragua: Investing in Medical Tourism

Part of the new office tower being built in the Vivian Pellas hospital at a cost of $18 million will be used for the care of foreign patients.

With patients coming from the United States and Europe, most of whom require services related to stem cells, orthopedics and bariatric surgery, average spending by tourists in the medical sector ranges from between $1,000 $2,000 daily. The dynamic medical tourism market in Central America is being influenced by the recent approval in the U.S. of the "Obama Care" health insurance system which is motivating migration of consumers to foreign health care centers that offer lower costs and sometimes less than the deductible that would be paid in the US.

"Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas (HMVP) will be investing $18 million to build a five story office tower, which will allow them to improve their specialized medical care that is experiencing strong demand from foreign citizens, because of the boom in medical tourism.

"'The whole subject of medical tourism is something we will be pushing hard, we have seen very positive results, there is a lot of interest not only from tourists who are coming to Nicaragua - that population, the demand from them is growing - but also (we are) looking at how to attract other people ... the idea is to find out how to specialize in certain areas in order to make the hospital a center for referrals at the regional level, " said Dr. Adolfo McGregor, a member of the Board of HMVP."
