Nicaragua: Insurance Grows 6% Despite Crisis

In spite of the crisis, Nicaragua's insurance industry keeps growing, and recorded sales for $8.5 million so far 2009.

Lucía Ramírez Sánchez, General Manager at "Aseguradora Mundial" Nicaragua, commented that Nicaragua's market is still very small, and has potential for development. In the same period, Central American insurers sold $260 million, making Nicaragua's share just 3% of the total.

Ramirez also told newspaper Elnuevodiario.com.ni that "compulsory auto insurance has fueled growth in the vehicle insurance sector by more than 6%".

The data was supplied by the Guatemalan Association of Insurance Institutions (Agis), which states that 20% of the market is made up of premiums from life policies, 29% for accident and health and the remaining 51% belongs to damage.

Projections for the insurance industry show growth of between 7 and 8% by the end of 2011.

Total net premiums will close at between $123 and $124 million, exceeding the $115 million recorded last year, said Luis Reynosa, of the Nicaraguan Association of Professional Insurance Agents, Anapsos.

Insurers Weather the Storm

The insurance industry kept on growing, albeit at a lower pace, in spite of economic and financial crisis.

In 2008 this industry sold 17% more insurance than in 2007, summing over $3 billion sales. It slowed considerably in 2009, but managed to maintain positive growth numbers.
