Nicaragua: Formal Employment Up 11%

A greater amount of private investment, mainly in construction and infrastructure and transport, explained most of the interannual increase of 11% in formal employment up to December 2016.

Up to December last year companies in the sectors of construction and infrastructure and transport workers increased their payroll by 22% and 20%, respectively, according to figures from the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security.

Laprensa.com.ni reports that "...Only the sector trade, hotels and restaurants, which remains the second largest source of formal employment generation, increased their share of official registered workers, by 18.034 workers, making a total of 165.970. This represents an increase of 12.2 percent compared to 2015."

"... In regards to the growth rate the sectors of construction and transport, storage and communication stood out last year in terms of formal employment creation. The first rebounded 21.8 percent and the second 19.9 percent. With its growth rate, construction created 5,698 jobs, with a total of 31.844. Meanwhile, the transport, storage and communication sector had a total number of workers legally registered under the social security system of 35.294, about 5,849 more than last year."

During the last five years the number of workers affiliated to the social insurance scheme increased by 35%, rising from 673 thousand in 2013 to 914 thousand in 2017.

According to figures from the Central Bank of Nicaragua, in the five-year period between 2013 and 2017, the affiliation of workers to the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security (INSS) registered sustained growth, reporting an average annual increase of 8%.

Formal employment in Nicaragua Continues to Grow

As of April, the year-on-year increase in the number of formal workers was 7%, mainly due to a 13% increase in companies working in the commerce, hotels and restaurants sector.

A report by the Central Bank of Nicaragua with figures for the month of April indicates that "...The administrative records of the INSS show the affiliation of 914,276 workers in April, 6.9 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year.

The annual growth of 8% in the number of workers affiliated to social security system up to January 2017 was explained mainly by the sectors of trade, hotels and services, and construction.

Greater amounts of private investment, mainly in the construction sector, explains part of the annual increase of 8.6% in formal employment in June 2015.

The number of workers registered with the Social Security Institute (INSS) went from 709,019 in June 2014 to 77,317 in the same month this year. At the same time, the average nominal wage increased by 6.6%.
