Nicaragua: FDI 2010 Would Close at $ 500 Million

ProNicaragua projects 15% growth in FDI relative to 2009.

During the first six months of the year $ 215.4 million was invested, although this is low compared to the same period in 2009, projections for the second half reversed this trend, due mainly to the start of renewable energy projects San Jacinto and Tizate Tumarín.

The projected figure of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) this year, is 80% more than the figure for 2010.

Javier Chamorro, Executive Director of the State Agency for Investment Promotion Nicaragua (ProNicaragua) told the media that the initial projections were for $1,039 million, adding that the $900 million collected this year was "close to the original goal."

The government hopes to capture this year $ 1,039 million in foreign direct investment (FDI).

The projections for this year are an increase of 107% compared to what was captured in 2010 which totaled $ 500 million.

According to information from the Central Bank of Nicaragua, in 2010 the energy sector was the largest recipient of investments with 29.2%, followed by telecommunications with 28.2%, 17.5% free zones and tourism with 10.1%.
