Nicaragua: Economic Analysis for September 2015

In the first nine months of the year, economic activity grew by 3.5% compared to the same period in 2014, but the sectors that explained their growth in the first semester, have slowed.

According to the Monthly Economic Activity Index (IMAE) up to September 2015, the growth rate of economic activity began to slow in early 2015. In January 2015 the average annual growth rate was 4.9 percent and in September it was 3.8 percent. In August this year alone a slight acceleration was observed. Meanwhile, the economy grew by 3.5 percent in the first nine months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014.

Construction, which has been one of the sectors that has boosted economic activity the most this year, is slowing. Its growth rate was 26.4 percent in the first half of the year, down to 14.6 percent in the third quarter. The completion of major construction projects in mid-year explains this slowdown.

In March, the monthly index of economic activity (IMAE by its initials in Spanish) showed growth of 4.0 percent year on year, with the annual average variation reaching 4.8 percent, and cumulative growth in the January-March period, 5.0 percent.

In October, the monthly index of economic activity (IMAE) grew 3.9 percent compared to October last year.

Costa Rica: Economic Situation in September 2015

For the first time in nine months the activity of the manufacturing sector in September recorded a slight growth of 0.7%, compared to the same period last year.

From a statement issued by the Central Bank of Costa Rica:

In the first nine months of 2015 domestic production, measured by the cycle trend of the Monthly Economic Activity Index, registered an average growth of 2.1%, while the annual rate for September was 2.6% (3.6% and 3.0% in the same period in 2014, respectively). While the economy is growing less than that observed a year ago, this demonstrates an acceleration in growth since March. For its part, the IMAE without Free Zones registered a growth of 3.0% (3.4% a year earlier).

The activities of trade and services, construction and agriculture accounted for most of the annual growth of 3.5% in economic activity compared to the same month in 2014.o

In May, the monthly index of economic activity (IMAE) grew by 3.5 percent compared to May 2014, accelerating by 0.3 percentage points from April.
