Nicaragua: Cocoa Production to Grow 25% in 2018

The cacao producers union is planning to produce this year close to 1,500 tons of cocoa, 25% more than the production recorded at the close of 2017.

Last year the export value went down 4%, due to unfavorable conditions in international prices, but the export volume grew by 34%, according to data from the Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua (Apen). Guillermo Jacoby, president of the Apen, explained to Elnuevodiario.com.ni: "...'We went from 4.2 million kilos to 5.5 million kilos last year'."

"... Last year, approximately 800 tons were purchased by the German manufacturer of chocolates Ritter sport, which is located in the municipality of Sébaco, Matagalpa, where it collects the raw material. "85% of the cocoa that is exported with differentiated prices comes from our organizations.  We have several organizations that export, such as Campesina and Cacaonica, and others with smaller volumes", he said.

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "...The main cocoa producing areas are the Triángulo Minero, Rancho Grande, Waslala, Matiguás, Paiwas, Río Blanco, El Tuma-La Dalia, Jinotega, El Rama, Muelle de los Bueyes, Nueva Guinea, Río San Juan, as well as Cárdenas and Colon. These are the geographic areas where the more than 4,000 members of Canicacao are present, however it is estimated that there are about 10,000 producers working in this sector throughout the country."

Cocoa Defies Crisis in Nicaragua

After last year's sales of grain abroad grew 19% compared to 2017, in the first eight months of 2019 Nicaraguan cocoa exports totaled $5.8 million, 48% more than in the same period of 2018.

Regarding the volume traded, the figures of the Exports Processing Center (Cetrex) that between January and August 2018 and the same period of 2019, the figure increased from 2,433 to 3,405 tons.

Nicaragua Sells Less Cocoa

Even though in 2018 cocoa was better quoted internationally, the volume sold abroad fell 8% compared to 2017, going down from 4,238 to 3,886 tons.

In contrast to the negative variation in the volume traded, figures from the Export Processing Center (Cetrex) detail that between 2017 and 2018 the value of exports registered a 18.9% growth, increasing from $5.3 million to $6.3 million.

Regional Cocoa Forum Honduras

Central American producers are invited to attend the Regional Cocoa Forum on August 17 and 18 in the Expocentre in San Pedro Sula.

The Cocoa Producers Association of Honduras (APROCACAHO) invites producers in Central America to exchange experiences regarding climate change, markets and obtaining good cocoa prices, reported Latribuna.hn.

More Competition in the Cocoa Market

This year Ecuador could surpass Brazil as the largest producer of cocoa in America, with an expected increase of 9% in production, estimated at 240 thousand tons.

Like other producers of the grain, Ecuador is taking advantage of the surge in global demand for chocolate, devoting more resources to the cocoa industry in the country.
