Pineapples, fresh oranges, leather goods, timber, cocoa, scrap metal, confectionery and pharmaceutical products are some of the export items which recorded significant increases compared to the first quarter of 2016.

In the case of fresh oranges, Laprensa.com.ni reports that "... although in 2015 shipments dwindled by 62% in volume and 22% in value, in 2016 a growth of 70% was registered in volume and 53 % in value. "

Pineapple exports showed an increase of over 4000% in the period under analysis. According to Leonel Ortiz, general manager of Tropicana Fruit, "... the behavior seen in pineapple exports is due to demand for that product in the international market, mainly from  the United States."

Other products such as manufactured leather goods were also significant in the first quarter. The value of exports grew by 220% compared to the first quarter of 2016.  "... Giving added value to leather is marking the opening of demanding markets such as Europe. Mario Arana, general manager of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua (CEF), explains that leather manufacturers in the country are producing linings for luxury vehicles, but also being developed are protective sleeves and bibs, footwear, book covers, bottle holders, belts, sashes, wallets, folders, make up cases and handbags."
