Nicaragua Begins to Sell Robusta Coffee

For the 2018-2019 harvest, the country began to export coffee of the Robusta variety, and according to the producers for the next agricultural cycles they plan to increase their cultivable area.

According to figures from the Center for Export Procedures (Cetrex) between October 2018 and May 2019, the country sold abroad about 50,000 quintals of the Robusta variety, being the first time that the species of the grain is reported in official export figures.

José Ángel Buitrago, president of the Nicaraguan Coffee Exporters Association (Excan), confirmed to Elnuevodiario.com.ni that the country "... began to export grains of this variety. This year is already exporting Robusta, we always said that Robusta coffee has its market apart from Arabica. People said they were going to mix it, but they're so different that you're going to notice it immediately."

Buitrago added that "... Nicaragua was an importer of robusta coffee to supply the country's instant coffee factory. Because the company that makes instant coffee is 'well supplied with the national production' the country decided to sell the surplus that is being produced."

According to CentralAmericaData's "Crop Monitoring", last year the main regional crop sold abroad was coffee, with $2.671 million, the main export destinations being the U.S., Germany, Belgium, Italy, Japan and Canada, which together represented 70% of the volume exported by the region, equivalent to approximately $2.050 million.

New Markets for Nicaraguan Coffee

Malaysia, India, the Dominican Republic, Israel, Georgia and Syria are the six countries that for the first time imported Nicaraguan coffee during the 2016/17 harvest.

At a value of almost $10 million, Nicaragua exported 65,000 hundredweight of coffee to these six countries during the 2016/17 harvest. Although only small amounts were sold in each of these markets, the grain exporters' association believes that the opening of new destinations for Nicaraguan coffee is positive.

Costa Rica Could Return to Growing Robusta Coffee

With the aim of replacing imports and reviving areas with low productive development a proposal has been made to lift the ban which has been in force since 1988 and re-grow robusta.

Replacing ever increasing coffee imports with local production, which according to figures from PROCOMER, reached 3500 tons in the first five months of this year, is one of the main motivations of the plan being prepared by producers, exporters and roasters, together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
