Nicaragua: 70% Drop in Chicken Meat Exports

99.246 kilograms of chicken meat were exported in the first half of 2009, 70% less than the 326.682 kilograms exported in the same period of 2008.

Donald Tuckler, executive secretary at the Nicaraguan Poultry Producers Association (Anapa, spanish acronym), indicated that, given the failure of the sale to Venezuela, they are analyzing exporting to Guatemala and Costa Rica, recovering the Honduran market, maintaining exports to Dominican Republic, and "taking advantage of any other opportunity".

Gisella Canales writes in La Prensa: "In September 2008, Anapa's president Alfredo Vélez said that, beginning October, 1.500 tons of white meat would be exported to Venezuela each quarter. However, Tuckler explained that even though Nicaragua had complied with all the requirements and quality standards, the sale fell trough."

Jorge Ulloa, president of the National Association Honduran Farmers told La Prensa that they "will continue exporting to Central American countries like Guatemala and El Salvador. They also want to open the market in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the Caribbean," and that "they will continue exporting chicken legs to China."
