Nicaragua: $33 million Palm Oil Exports

In 2016 foreign sales of palm oil grew by 13% in value and 21% in volume comapred to the previous year.

Central Bank figures report that the volume of palm oil sold abroad in 2016 was 51.8 million kilos, 21% more than the volume exported in 2015.  In value terms, sales in 2016 generated $33 million, 12% more than the $29 million generated in 2015.

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "...According to the Fourth National Agricultural Census (CENAGRO 2011), in the 2010-2011 production cycle 18,809.24 hectares of land were planted with oil palm. However, today there is talk of more than 30,000 hecrares in that category."

October last year saw the opening of  "... the first palm oil extraction plant in El Rama, with a Guatemalan investment of $13 million."

The Potential of Palm Oil in Nicaragua

March 2017

22 thousand hectares are devoted to growing palm in the country, and investments of $150 million are planned for maintenance of existing plantations and new ones in the coming years.

The 22 thousand hectares of African palm currently produce 70 thousand tons of crude oil which are destined for local consumption and export. In 2016 the revenue generated from sales abroad totaled $33 million, 13% more than in 2015.
