New Cruise Ship Port in Roatán Opens in November

The second cruise ship port in the Bay lslands will open on November 20, after a $62 million investment.

It is the first phase of Carnival Cruise Line's project in Roatán, and boasts 7.000 constructed square meters, including commercial space.

Elheraldo.hn reports: "For this project, Carnival joined forces with businessman Jerry Hinds. Named 'Mahogany Bay Roatán', it will serve 7.000 daily passengers through two docking stations, enabling simultaneous arrival of ships".

In February 88,000 Tourists to Land in Roatan

During this month a total of 37 cruise ships will dock in the ports of Roatan and Mahogany Bay, each which will be carrying between 2000 and 3000 tourists.

From the press release issued by the Honduran Tourism Institute of Honduras:

As occurred in January, February will be another busy month for tourism in Roatan, the Bay Islands with the arrival of more than 88,000 cruise ship passengers, on board 37 ships which will dock every day at the ports of Roatan and MahoganyBay, said authorities from the Secretariate and Honduran Tourism Institute.

Florida Caribbean Cruise Association to Visit Honduras

The Florida Caribbean Cruise Representatives Association (FCCA) wants to personally see sites that may be suitable for installing luxury cruise terminals in the future.

A high level delegation from the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) will visit Honduras next week to learn about different locations in the Honduran Caribbean that could become luxury cruise terminals, revealed the Ministry of Tourism.

Cruise Tourism in Central America Growing

Countries are making significant efforts to strengthen this sector, according to the Tourism Promotion Agency of Central America.

Honduras recently reported the arrival of 470,000 cruise passengers in the first six months of 2011, over 188 cruise ships, 115 of which landed in Mohogany Bay, which recently opened a new dock.

Some 200 ships will arrive in Roatan on a yearly basis, once the new cruise ship dock starts operating in October 2009.

The liberal congressman for the Bay Islands Department, Jerry Hinds, said that once it is inaugurated it will provide services to cruise ship companies throughout the entire year, and should bring around 200 ships with tourist to Roatan per year.
