More and More Tourism Businesses in Nicaragua

In the last five years the number of companies engaged in activities related to tourism has doubled, from 2,500 to over 5,800.

In five years, the number of micro, small and medium tourism enterprises has increased from 2,526 to 5,867, creating 37,000 direct and 140,000 indirect jobs, said the Institute of Tourism.

These 5,867 micro, small and medium tourism businesses represent 90% of companies registered with the Intur to date, which total 6,500, reported Laprensa.com.ni.

According to official figures, Nicaragua received a million tourists in 2011, who spent an average $44 per day. "Micro and small businesses are the backbone of the tourism development of our country", said the chief executive of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (Intur), Mario Salinas.

Panama Registers More Tourism Companies

In 2017, 42 operating licenses were authorized for tour operators and travel agencies, and 75 hotels throughout the country also began operations.

Among the licenses processed, 41 are type A (tour operators) and one type B (travel agencies).  The province of Panama reflected the highest registry with 24 licenses, and the province of Chiriqui with 8. 

Costa Rica: Travel Agencies Excluded From 2% tax Deduction

The Ministry of Finance has announced that tour operators and travel agencies are not subject to the 2% deduction relating to advanced income tax payment on credit card transactions.

From a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic of Costa Rica:

The Ministry of Finance today reported that at the request of the representatives of the tourism industry, the General Department of Taxation review the status of tour operators and travel agencies and exclude them from withholding money, on the grounds that these two activities in the tourism sector supported the request with their technical studies which were reviewed by the Tax Administration Office. This exclusion does not include the hotel industry.

Spanish Firm El Corte Inglés Launched in Panama

In the short term, the Spanish retail giant will open a travel agency in the luxurious Trump Ocean Tower in the capital. In the long term, it could build a shopping center.

Tourism industry representatives are participating in the Annual Meeting of the United States Association of Tour Operators, known by the acronym USTOA.

A press release from the newspaper "El Pueblo Presidente" reads:

The CEO of INTUR, Architect Mario Salinas Pasos, is heading a delegation that is participating in North America in the Annual Meeting of the United States Association of Tour Operators known by the acronym USTOA.
