In 2017, purchases made by the Central American country from Chinese companies totaled $1.97 billion, 6% more than the amount imported in 2016.

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

According to figures from the Banco de Guatemala, between 2016 and 2017, Guatemalan imports from the Asian country rose from $1.854 billion to $1.970 billion, registering an increase of 6.3%.

Regarding this increase, Pedro Barnoya, president of the China-Guatemala Chamber of Cooperation and Trade, explained to Dca.gob.gt that " ...'The trade balance for our country is deficient, as China swapped its eminently agricultural matrix in 1980 to a more industrialized one, in which they manufacture high-end items such as cell phones, televisions and computers.'"

The article recounts that the main purchases that Guatemala made from China over the past year were " ... textiles with US $210 million and vehicles and transportation material, with US $166.3 million. "

In January this year, purchases amounted to $103.2 million, demonstrating an upward trend, as this figure is 44.9% more than in the corresponding period in 2011 ($71.2 million).
