Milk Producers Demand Better Prices

In Chiriqui, Panama, where 5.8 million liters of milk are produced per month, the production cost of a liter is $0.51, whereas the producer is paid $0.49.

Production costs have exceed the price paid to producers, said Felipe Alvarez, President of the Association of Dairy Producers in Panama (Aprogalpa).

"Producers of dairy cattle in the province of Chiriqui are asking industrial plants to raise the price paid by 16 cents on each liter of product bringing the price to 65 cents", reported Prensa.com.

Milk Consumption in Panama Still Rising

In four years, production increased from 150 million liters to 200 million liters, while annual per capita consumption has increased from 93 to 100 liters from 2012 to date.

Although yet to reach 135 million liters per year recommended by the World Health Organization, preference for consuming milk shows an upward trend among Panamanians, which creates opportunities in the livestock sector which dedicated to dairy products.

Importing breeding cows and strengthening programs for embryo transfer and artificial insemination, are some of the initiatives proposed in order to increase milk production.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Oscar Osorio Casal, met with members of various dairy guilds from around the country, in order to structure a joint project to increase milk production in the country.
