In light of an oversupply of milk that is affecting the Honduran livestock sector, producers are looking for neighboring markets where they can export milk. They report that many of the plants in Honduras are not receiving the surplus product because they do not have the capacity to process it.

Jacobo Paz, head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) "... said that they want, through the Senasa, to certify artisanal plants in order to take advantage of the opening of the Salvadoran market and increase shipments to that country."

In an article by Laprensa.hn Paz added that "...'Representatives from twelve plants that are already exporting traveled to the country with Vice Minister Osorio and other authorities to see the new guidelines they have for exports. The objective is to continue sending dairy products and increase the volume of sales taking advantage of the surplus that exists."

Domestic milk consumption is growing at 3.9% annually, while exports in 2010 reached $74 million, compared to $49 million sold abroad in 2008.

The country ranks third in Latin America in per capita consumption with 199 liters per year, according to the Chamber of National Milk Producers (NCPC in Spanish).
