Guatemala and Costa Rica, Main Importers
In the first half of 2020 the main buyers in the region were Guatemala and Costa Rica, with $3 million each, Honduras, with $2.5 million, Panama, with $1.4 million, El Salvador, with $800 thousand and Nicaragua, with $700 thousand.

From January to June 2020, imports from all markets decreased in year-on-year terms. Purchases from Nicaragua and Honduras decreased by 3%, from Panama by 31%, from Guatemala by 37%, from Costa Rica by 41% and from El Salvador by 54%.

Regional Business Down
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020 the imported value of microwave ovens in Central America decreased by 33%, from $17.4 million to $11.7 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from China, Malaysia and the U.S. decreased by 33%, 12% and 30%, in that order.

China and Malaysia, Most Important Suppliers
Last year, 74% of the value of imports in the region came from China, 9% from the USA, 8% from Malaysia and 1% from Mexico.

Malaysia is one of the markets of origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 4% of the total purchases of Central America, and in 2020 that proportion rose to 9%.
