During the first quarter of 2021, Honduras was the main importer of microwave ovens in the Central American region, in this period the largest supplier was China with 72.17% representing $7.1 million.

Honduras and Guatemala, Main Importers
In the first quarter of 2021, the main buyer in the region was Honduras, which imported $1.9 million, followed by Guatemala with $1.7 million, Costa Rica with $1.5 million, Panama with $0.7 million, El Salvador with $0.5 million and Nicaragua with $0.3 million.

Compared to last year's quarter, imports from all markets increased on a year-over-year basis. Nicaragua's purchases grew by 10.7%, Guatemala's by 110.6%, Costa Rica's by 71.5%, Panama's by 114.9% and El Salvador's by 99.5%. The country whose imports decreased was Honduras with 39%.

Regional Business on the Rise
Between the first quarter of 2020 and 2021, the imported value of microwave ovens in Central America increased by 50.1%, from $6.5 million to $9.8 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from China and the U.S. decreased by 3.44% and 3.2% in that order, and purchases from Malaysia grew by 1.76%.

China and Malaysia, the Most Important Suppliers
Last year, 72.17% of the value imported into the region came from China, 7.03% from Malaysia, 6.63% from the U.S., 6.60% from the Panama Free Trade Zone and 6.15% from Mexico.

Malaysia is one of the markets of origin of imports that has grown the most in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 2.23% of total purchases from Central America, and in the first quarter of 2021 that proportion rose to 7.03%.
