Mexico Wants to Export More Bananas to Europe

Producers from the state of Tabasco want to eliminate the tariffs that apply to the entry of this fruit into the European Union, its main export market, which is even greater than the United States.

From a report by PROCOMER in Costa Rica:

Tabasco is one of the main banana producing states in Mexico and it is aiming to eliminate tariffs that apply to this fruit when entering the European Union (EU), since it is its market par excellence, even ahead of the United States.

In the view of producers from this State it is important that during the renegotiations of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Mexico (TLCUEM) their request be taken into account because this market represents around 70% of their total exports, reported Adrián Prats, representative of the Banana Product System nationwide.

In the first six months of this year Bonanza Fruit, the only company exporting bananas to Russia, has doubled its exports.

The company, backed by Russian capital, sent 400 container loads to Russia in the first six months of 2009 while in the same period of this year it sent 950 containers, each with capacity for 1,080 20.4kg boxes.
