Mexican Washing Machines Gaining Ground in Central America

In recent years, washing machines of Mexican origin have become more important in terms of the amount purchased, since from January to September 2012 they accounted for 15% of total regional imports and for the same period in 2020 the proportion rose to 26%.

Costa Rica and Guatemala, Main Buyers
During the first nine months of 2020 the main buyer of washing machines in Central America was Costa Rica, with $23 million, followed by Guatemala, with $22 million, Panama, with $12 million, El Salvador, with $10 million, Honduras, with $7 million and Nicaragua, with $6 million.

From January to September 2020, all Central American markets reduced their purchases in year-on-year terms. In Nicaragua imports fell 10%, in Guatemala 11%, in Costa Rica 23%, in Panama 32%, in El Salvador 33% and in Honduras 38%.

Central America Buys Less Washing Machines
For the periods between January and September 2019 and the same period in 2020, the imported value of washing machines and their parts in Central America decreased 24%, falling from $106 million to $81 million.

Mexico and China, Main Suppliers in the Region
In the first nine months of 2020, 26% of regional purchases came from Mexico, 22% from China, 18% from the USA, 18% from Thailand, 5% from Vietnam and 3% from Brazil.

For the months in question in recent years Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most, as in 2012 it accounted for 15% of regional purchases and in 2018 the proportion rose to 26%.

During the first half of 2019, Central American companies imported $200 million in fridges and freezers, and purchases from companies in Mexico grew 6% over the same period in 2018.

Washing Machines: More Business with Thailand

January 2019

In the first six months of 2018, Central America imported $67 million for washing machines and their parts, and purchases from Thailand increased 11% compared to the same period in 2017.
