Metro is Viable in Guatemala

A study by French company Systra indicates the feasibility of building a subway in the capital.

Prensalibbre.com reports, “Vice President Rafael Espada, who a year ago had curiosity to know if it was possible to have a metro in Guatemala, said that while it is a long term project, it is possible for the contract to be drawn up in 2011."

Another Attempt to Build a Metro

In Guatemala, it is proposed to develop an underground metro that would connect in its initial phase the municipality of Mixco with Zone 15 of the capital and would require a $700 million investment.

The new project proposed is in addition to the several proposals and attempts that have been made to implement a mass transportation system in the metropolitan area of Guatemala, which resolves at once the serious problem of road congestion affecting the capital. Thus, in addition to the Metro Riel project and the urban cable cars between Mixco, Villa Nueva and the capital, a new initiative has now been added to build an underground train.

Guatemala Studies Metro Feasibility

$870.000, donated by the French government, will be spent in a feasibility study for building an underground metro in the capital city.

Héctor Cifuentes, municipal secretary, explained they will assist the French team with physical space, offices in the municipality and transportation around the city.

Guatemala's vice president, Rafael Espada, says one of the main transport reorganization projects in Guatemala City will be to construct a metro system in the capital.

He said that the project is part of an overall plan, but added that he hopes it can be carried out before the administration of President Álvaro Colom ends in 2012.
