Medicines: Purchases Exceed $3.5 Billion

During 2020, Central American imports of pharmaceutical products totaled $3.502 billion, and purchases from Mexican companies increased by 2% over the amount reported in 2019.

Costa Rican Companies: Main Buyers
Last year the main buyer of pharmaceutical products in Central America was Costa Rica, with $846 million, followed by Guatemala, with $687 million, Panama, with $620 million, Honduras, with $525 million, El Salvador, with $428 million and Nicaragua, with $388 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases abroad, for the period in question, Nicaragua reported an increase of 7%, followed by Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, with 3% each.

Panama was the only market in the region whose imports in 2020 fell by 12%.

Regional Business, Slightly Declining
Between 2019 and 2020 the imported value of pharmaceutical products in Central America registered a slight positive variation, going from $3,498 million to $3,502 million.

For the periods in question, regional purchases from Spain increased by 11%, rising from $167 million to $185 million, and imports from Mexico increased by 2%, rising from $293 million to $297 million.

Germany and Mexico: Main Suppliers
Last year, 9% of the value of imports from Central America came from Germany, 9% from Mexico, 8% from the USA, 5% from Spain, 5% from India, 4% from Switzerland, 4% from Colombia, 4% from France and 2% from Argentina.

Germany is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 4% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 9%.
