Medicines: Business with Mexico up 7%

From January to July 2020, purchases of pharmaceutical products made by Central American countries from Mexican companies totaled $174 million, 7% more than what was reported for the same period in 2019.

Panama, Main Buyer
During the first seven months of 2020, the main buyer of pharmaceutical products from Mexico continued to be Panama, with $109 million, followed by Guatemala, with $52 million, Costa Rica, with $32 million, El Salvador, with $24 million, Honduras and Nicaragua, with $15 million each.

As of June of this year, companies in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, an area known as the region's Southern Triangle, concentrated 63% of Central American purchases from Mexico.

The remaining 37% was imported by Honduran, Guatemalan and Salvadoran companies.

Variation of Regional Imports
Between the first seven months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported increased by 7%, from $163 million to $174 million.

The increase for the months in question contrasts with the behavior reported for the same period in 2019, since from January to July of that year there was a 4% year-on-year decrease.
