Nicaraguan Meat Won't be Auctioned in Panama

Finally it seems a solution has been found to the entry restrictions on Nicaraguan beef in the Panamanian market, as part of the conditions imposed on the canal country for trade integration with Central America.

Monday, August 6, 2012

According to an article in Prensa.com "Panama can be integrated with Central America (CA), but in exchange it must accept some conditions, including the mechanism of entry of the beef quota from Nicaragua", which does not include it being marketed through auction on the National Products Exchange (Baisa).

Diana Salazar, Vice Minister for International Trade Negotiations, commented that "'seeing that Nicaragua has a monthly cap on meat we agree to it possibly changing and this will depend on how what modifications are made in the treaty."

The entry of meat from Nicaragua under these conditions is opposed by local ranchers, who point out the advantage of the lower cost of labor paid by agribusiness in Nicaragua.
