The new Metropolitan International Airport could start operating in 2027 with an estimated traffic of 7.8 million passengers, and an estimated $1.9 billion initial investment.

The government has presented the results of the siting study, basic design and master plan for the new airport, to be located in Orotina.
- The Master Plan details that the project will be divided into three phases: in phase 1, with 128 thousand square meters of passenger terminal, there will be two runways and a main access road that will lead users to the terminal through the Airport city; in both the second (146 thousand square meters of passenger terminal) and third phase (186 thousand square meters of passenger terminal), expansion will be made of the second runway, transport infrastructure, the airport city, the terminal and the different support areas that make up the project.
- In order to ensure the smooth functioning of the new airport, it is important to carry out investments in road and railway infrastructure works, such as the expansion of Route 27, the construction of the Western Highway Interconnection Corridor and improvement and maintenance of routes 131, 137, 755, 713 and 756.Also necessary is building rail access, as recommended in the master plan.
- When the first phase is concluded, traffic of 7.8 million passengers is estimated; After 20 years this figure increases by 15.2 million.The operation at the point of maximum development of the new airport will generate 80 thousand direct, indirect and induced jobs and will contribute $1.5 billion to GDP, determined the study.

The plan to build a new international airport in Orotina, which ex-president Solis presented grandiloquently last year, is not a priority for the current Costa Rican government.
A year and a half ago, the administration of President Luis Guillermo Solis announced that the international air terminal would open in a first phase in 2027, and the overall cost of the project was estimated at $2 billion.
A US company has submitted an environmental impact study to build an international airport in Limón, Costa Rica, which will have a 4-kilometer runway, an 18,000 square meter passenger terminal and a 30,000 square meter warehouse.
It has been announced that starting from August 20 companies interested in developing an environmental feasibility study for the new Metropolitan Airport of Costa Rica, to be built in Orotina, may present their proposals.
Civil Aviation Authorities reported that the reference value for the environmental feasibility study of the air terminal is $1.1 million.
The British company Mott McDonald will have twelve months to complete the site study, basic design and master plan for the new airport, which will be located in Orotina.
