Manufacturing Sector: Production Falls 5%

The decline in the production of food products and beverages, influenced that during the first half of 2019 in Panama reported a 4.6% year-on-year fall in the production volume of manufacturing companies.

The behavior of the manufacturing industries, observed through their global integrated indices of volume, prices and value presented, for the first semester of 2019, compared with the same period of the previous year, decreases in the order of 4.6%, 0.5% and 5.0% respectively, informed the General Comptroller's Office of the Republic.

The report states that "... At the level of industrial division, among the activities that affected the decrease in volumes produced, are those of Food and beverage processing that were reduced in items such as: Processing and conservation of fish and fish products, Preparation of oils and fats of vegetable or animal origin, Preparation of dairy products, Preparation of bakery products, Manufacture of sugar, Elaboration of malted beverages and malts and Elaboration of non-alcoholic beverages; bottling of mineral waters.”

Likewise, the Manufacture of garments for dressing, marinating and dyeing of skins decreased its volume and value by 19.0% and 17.7%, with an increase of its prices by 1.6%. The Publishing, printing and reproduction of recordings activities decreased their volume and value by 4.6% and 3.0% with an increase of their prices by 1.6%.

Other industrial divisions which showed negative variations in their volumes, prices and value were those of Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products in 11.9%, 3.8% and 15.2% in order, Manufacture of chemical substances and products in 3.1%, 14.9% and 17.5%, respectively, Manufacture of paper and paper products, Manufacture of textile products and Tanning and marinating of leather; manufacture of suitcases, handbags; saddlery and saddlery articles, footwear.

During the first three months of the year, the production volume index of manufacturing industries registered a decrease of 2.7% compared to the same period in 2017.

The Comptroller General of the Republic reported that " ... The behavior of the manufacturing industries observed through its integrated global indexes of volume, prices and value showed for the period January to March 2018, compared to the same period in the previous year, a decrease in production volumes in the order of 2.7%, and growth in their prices and value of 3.1% and 0.4%, respectively. "

In 2015 Panamanian industry fell by 2% in production volume and 1% in value, while product prices rose by 1.1% in the same period.

From a statement issued by the National Institute of Statistics and Census in Panama:

The behavior of manufacturing observed through its global integrated volume indices, prices and value, saw in the period January to December 2015, compared to the same period last year, declines in volume and value by the order of 2% and 0.9%, respectively, and price growth of 1.1%.
