Management and Artificial Intelligence

Having general ideas of how a computer can look at an image and identify a stop sign, a pedestrian or a car, is fundamental for business leaders to be able to empower humans with the help of artificial intelligence.

The development of artificial intelligence tools suggests that human work will be abolished, something that could be far away, since these technological applications are for now used for the execution of specific business tasks and not for problem solving.

Thomas W. Malone, director of MIT's Center for Collective Intelligence, believes that "... Many senior executives and business leaders today are almost desperate to understand how AI can affect their businesses. I think leaders are increasingly concerned that if they don't figure out how to use AI effectively, they will be left behind."

Regarding AI and the work of humans, Malone believes that intelligent systems are already in use around the world: robots in stores, digital voice assistants in homes, credit risk assessment programs in banks. These technologies have specialized intelligence and are capable of performing specific tasks. But artificial intelligence is not yet capable of general intelligence, such as that possessed by humans.

Mitsloan.mit.edu's article reviews that "... Just because a program can do something that would be difficult for humans doesn't mean that the same program can do all the other things that would be easier for humans to do,' Malone said. In many cases, it can't do many of those other things. Companies that already use AI are using it for specific tasks, but not for general problem solving."
