Maersk Announces Rate Hike for Refrigerated Cargo

The shipping company has announced a rise in service fees for transporting refrigerated containers from Central and South America and Africa.

In 2011, as result of the high prices of bunker fuel, the shipping company increased its fares for regular (dry) containers by 30%, on routes serving Latin America.

"'With a market share of 24%, refrigerated containers are an area in which we are, to put it mildly, overweight. If you look at the business of refrigerators, refrigerated container cost 4 or 5 times more than a regular container', said a statement.

According to the shipping company, which uses the canal, investment alone is much larger when compared with the regular containers used in the market. Besides the container, the company claims another requirement is electrical connection points, on ships and on land, the cost of providing electricity, more expensive insurance, etc..
