Lufthansa Ready to Fly to Panama

The German airline has announced it will be ready to start operating direct flights to Panama City starting January 2015.

Adding to the interest of other European airlines and responding to the increasing number of German tourists entering Panama, Lufthansa has notified the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP ) that it is able to start direct flights to Tocumen airport in January 2015 and is looking to finalize the respective agreement under process.

"In the negotiations it was agreed that the ATP will deliver to Lufthansa $500 thousand a year for three years for each frequency going directly to Panama. This mechanism has been used with other airlines such as Iberia, KLM, AirFrance, and is done to promote a new route, and cover the risks faced by the airlines when they open a new market."

"Panama already has direct flights to Spain, the Netherlands and France. On July 2 the first flight by the Portuguese airline TAP will arrive. The company will fly direct to Colombia, then go to Tocumen, and then return to Europe."

Iberia to fly 7 days a week to Panama

European Airlines Interested in Panama

A French and German airline has sought information on the requirements to apply for permits to establish air links with Panama.

Representatives from the Civil Aviation Authority could be traveling in the coming weeks to Europe to negotiate with the airlines.

"Currently, Iberia from Madrid, Spain, and KLM, from Amsterdam, Netherlands, fly direct between Tocumen International Airport and Europe.

The Panamanian government and the airline have widened the scope of their agreement to add a fifth weekly flight with each party investing $370,000 in the route's market.

The signing of the new agreement between Iberia and the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) will increase the frequency of flights to five per week from Madrid Barajas airport to Panama's Tocumen International airport.
