Light Trucks: Regional Purchases Fall 23%

In the first three months of 2019, countries in the region imported light trucks for $40 million, 23% less than reported in the same period in 2018.

Guatemala the Main Importer
In the first quarter of 2019 the main buyer of trucks with a load capacity greater than 5 tons and less than 20 tons in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $15 million, followed by Costa Rica and El Salvador, with $7 million each, Panama, with $5 million, Honduras, with $4 million, and Nicaragua, with $3 million.

Central American Purchases Fall
Between January and March 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of light trucks imported into Central America decreased 23%, from $52 million to $40 million.

More Japanese Trucks in Central America
In the first three months of 2018, 57% of the value imported from Central America came from Japan, 14% from the U.S., 10% from China and 5% from Mexico.

Japan is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question of the last eight years, since in 2013 represented 41% of the total value purchased and in 2019 the proportion increased to 57%.
