Guatemala, Main Importer
As of March 2021, the main buyer of trucks with load capacity greater than 5 tons and less than 20 tons in Central America continued to be Guatemala with $14.4 million, followed by El Salvador and Honduras with $4.8 million each, Panama with $4.4 million, Costa Rica continues with $4.2 million and Nicaragua with $2.2 million.

During the first quarter of 2021, imports grew in year-on-year terms in Nicaragua 111.8%, El Salvador 79.6%, Honduras by 78.3%, Guatemala 44.4% and finally Costa Rica by 4.8%.

Panamanian imports decreased by 23.9%.

Central American Purchases Rise
Between the first three months of 2020 and the same period of 2021, the imported value of light-duty trucks in Central America increased 44.71%, going from $34.8 million to $50.3 million.

More Japanese trucks in Central America
In the first quarter of 2021, 47.6% of the value imported from Central America came from Japan, 22.72% from the U.S., 12.11% from China, 7.92% from Guatemala and 2.46% from Mexico.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 1.7% of the total value purchased and in 2021 the proportion rose to 12.11%.
