Laptops and Tablets: Regional Purchases Up 14%

Imports in the sector continue to rise, since from January to September 2020, companies from Central American countries imported $367 million in laptops and similar devices, 14% more than in the same period of 2020.

Costa Rica, Main Buyer
During the first nine months of 2020 the main importer of laptops and tablets in Central America was Costa Rica with $270 million, followed by Guatemala with $164 million, Panama with $92 million, El Salvador with $80 million, Honduras with $49 million and Nicaragua with $36 million.

For the period in question, Costa Rican and Guatemalan imports increased 39% and 30%, respectively, in year-on-year terms. Honduran purchases decreased 1%, Panamanian 3%, Salvadoran 21% and Nicaraguan 46%.

Regional Business Up
Between January-September 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region rose 14%, increasing from $323 million to $367 million.

For the periods in question, imports from the U.S. rose 29%, from $134 million to $173 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to September, 47% of the value of imports in the region came from the U.S., 42% from China, 1% from Vietnam, 1% from Mexico, 1% from Germany and 1% from Denmark.

Chinese imports have gained ground in recent years, as in 2012 they accounted for 21% of the total at the regional level and in 2020 the proportion rose to 47%.
