Job Creation to Improve in Panamanian Construction

In 2010, the Panamanian construction industry is expected to generate more jobs than in 2009.

Several large construction projects will begin this year, the most notable being the third set of locks of the Panama Canal, the extension of the highway known as the "Coastal Belt", and the construction of a sewer tunnel and a water treatment plan for the bay of the City of Panama.

Panamanian Labor Market Figures

During the last ten years, the Panamanian economy generated about 429 thousand jobs, of which 79% are from the commerce and services sector.

According to figures from the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (Mitradel), in the last decade 21 of every 100 jobs created are in the sectors of agroindustry, manufacturing and agriculture. 

Nicaragua: Formal Employment Up 11%

A greater amount of private investment, mainly in construction and infrastructure and transport, explained most of the interannual increase of 11% in formal employment up to December 2016.

Up to December last year companies in the sectors of construction and infrastructure and transport workers increased their payroll by 22% and 20%, respectively, according to figures from the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security.

Guatemala: Shopping Center Creates Jobs

The construction and subsequent operation of Portales Mall is generating about 4,000 jobs both direct and indirect.

For ten months the construction company Spectrum has invested nearly $45 million in building a new mall in zone 17 of Guatemala City.

Of the total jobs created with this new development, 2500 are in the area of construction and the remaining 1500 in the operational area of the mall, which is expected to open in October.

Private Employment Drops in Costa Rica

The recovery which started in September 2009 has come to an end in March 2010 and since then, more than 3,000 jobs have been lost.

The global economic crisis of 2008 caused the disappearance of 50,000 jobs in the private sector. Recovery began in September 2009 through March 2010 generating 36,000 new jobs. But since then, private employment has begun to fall again.
