Investments Announced in Hotels in Guatemala

The industry is looking to regain ground in the country with the expansion of four chains of hotels by the end of 2016.

La Quinta Inns & Suites, Hyatt, Four Seasons and Marriott hotels are to be added to the supply in the Guatemalan market. Zone 10, Quetzaltenango and Antigua are some of the locations that will host these projects.

Peter Duchez, director of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT) told elperiodico.com.gt that "... There is $350 million in investment in the tourism sector, but he did not specify details. Local representatives of the chains are constant contact for registration, which includes among other things, endorsing the number of stars the establishment has and rates. "

"... The INGUAT estimated investment of over $100 million which could increase by between 1500 and 2500 the actual number of rooms available in the country, which stands at 15,000 in total."

Another Investment by Riu Hotels in Panama

With an investment of $67 million the Spanish chain Riu Hotels & Resorts will build a beach resort in the district of Rio Hato, Cocle Province.

The 520 room hotel under the name Riu Playa Blanca, will be the second in Panama owned by the chain, after having opened the Rui Plaza in 2010 which has 645 rooms in the capital.
