Investment in Nicaraguan Customs Offices Announced

With $80 million from the IDB and the European Union modernization works will be undertaken at five land border crossings.

If the disbursement of resources goes ahead, the border to be upgraded will be Las Manos, Guasaule, El Espino, Penas Blancas and San Pancho. 

Elnuevodiario.com.ni reports that "...The business leader also reported that the Government of Nicaragua requested the installation of another scanner that will join the two that are currently operating at the border post of Peñas Blancas.  "We are trying to make an effort to find the answers our sector needs. We believe that Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador should move in the same direction, we have insisted that there must be an internal political commitment on the part of each country'."

Finally, the Legislative Assembly has approved the IDB loan to improve infrastructure at the border posts of Peñas Blancas, Paso Canoas, Las Tablillas and Sixaola.

Financial Support for Honduras-Guatemala Customs Union

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration has announced that this month it will deliver 55% of the funds required to implement the customs union between the two countries.

The funds pending for the implementation of the Customs Union between Guatemala and Honduras are being managed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) for a total of $1.5 million for delivery in February.

Approved resources from an international loan will be allocated to infrastructure improvements at the customs offices of Peñas Blancas, San Pancho and Guasaule.

One of the purposes of the improvements to be undertaken at the customs offices is to reduce the time it takes to process control of goods in transit, something that Nicaraguan businessmen and the region have complained about repeatedly.

A new customs office to be inaugurated in March 2014 will save commercial cargo 140 miles of travel to Puerto Limon in Costa Rica.

The president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep), Joseph Adam Aguerri has asked for "strengthening and securing of the new border crossing" in order to promote trade.
