International Cocoa Congress in Nicaragua

The International Congress on Sustainable Fine Cocoa Production will take place in Nicaragua on 9th and 10th of March 2016.

The state run Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) is inviting researchers, producers, exporters, technicians and traders of cocoa, to the International Congress on Sustainable Fine Cocoa Production, to be held on the 9th and 10th of March in Nicaragua. reports that "... the event will feature three central conferences and five working groups in which participants will exchange experiences on sustainable production techniques for fine cocoa."

The event is expected to attract some 250 domestic and foreign participants.

The country's inclusion in the list of fine cacao producers drawn up by the International Cocoa Organization has improved product positioning in the major buyer markets.  

From a statement issued by ProNicaragua:

As of September 21st, Nicaragua joined the list of countries of fine cocoa producers drawn up by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), after the country’s cocoa production was recognized as 100 percent fine cocoa.

Costa Rica Exports its Cocoa Unprocessed

Costa Rican cacao is the finest in the world, but the country lacks the technology to process it, and the chocolate consumed is mostly imported.

According to an article in, "Two projects developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE by its initials in Spanish) have focused since 2007 on increasing the quantity and quality of crops" This has allowed a rise in cultivation and production of cocoa, which after the attack of a pest in the 80s, was practically nil.

Guatemala and Costa Rica join Cacao producers association

Authorities from seven Latin American countries will create the "Association Fine Aroma Cacao Producing Countries" this week in Ecuador.

This organization will be established at meeting of producers and exporters of this type of cacao from Venezuela, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guatemala, Granada and Ecuador, declared Walter Poveda, Ecuadoran Minister of Agriculture, in a press release.
