Petrobras in talks to seek oil in Guatemala

Brazilian state oil company Petrobras is to hold talks with Guatemalan authorities with a view to studying the drilling potential of the Guatemalan Pacific.

Guatemala is also considering a move to join the Petrocaribe initiative under which Venezuela supplies oil at subsidized prices to the Caribbean, Nicaragua and Surinam.

Guatemalan Vice-President Rafael Espada flew out on a visit to Taiwan and Korea, promising to "think big" and shake off Guatemala's inferiority complex.

Espada said he would portray Guatemala as "a modern, democratic country with a social democratic government that has a vision of growth combined with social responsibility." He added that he would seek to woo potential investors.

Guatemala: Refinery and alliances with Petrobras

The Brazilian oil company Petrobras is interested in building a refinery in Guatemala, using capital from both countries. They want to seek local alliances to increase oil production in Guatemala, Guatemala's Energy and Mines Minister Carlos Meany said.

The meeting with directors of the Brazilian company was part of yesterday's agenda during the visit to Brazil of President Álvaro Colom and his delegation.

Panamanian trade delegation to visit Venezuela

A trade delegation from Panama will visit the city of Valencia, Venezuela, 150 km west of Caracas, on Wednesday. Its members will offer the region's productive sector a broad view of the business opportunities in their country arising from the Panama Canal expansion.

The visit is being treated as a trade mission, though it includes investment specialists from Panama.
