Inflation in Guatemala climbs to highest level in 15 years

Interannual inflation (for the last 12 months) rose to 14.16% in July, the highest since August 1993, the National Institute of Statistics reported.

The basic food basket for a family of five now costs Q1,941.65 per month, a rise of Q367.60 when compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the basic vital basket, which includes others expenses such as education, transport and health, shot up to Q3,543.16, or Q670.81 more than in July 2007.

Inflation closed last month at the highest level of the year: 5.25%.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the main increases were recorded in the food and beverages sector compared to October, which rose 1.51%, followed by health care costs with a monthly change of 0.52%.

There was a 0.95% increase recorded in the price of good in the basic food basket, or an accumulated inter-annual index of 15.77%, the highest it has been in 10 years.

"The inter-annual variation up to the end of September 2008 is the highest recorded in the last 10 years," INEC declared in a press release comparing the figure for the period from October 2007 to September 2008; it was at 9.43% in the previous period.

Panama: Basic Food Basket increased

The monthly cost of the Basic Family Food Basket (CBFA) increased in August by 1.5% in comparison to July.

According to the report from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the CBFA for August was at $263.01 while in July it was at $259.22. Still, if it is compared with January it has gone up 10%; when compared to August 2007 the increase was 16.6%.

El Salvador's basic food basket cost jumps in June

The price of the basic food basket in urban zones of El Salvador jumped by 6.27 dollars in June. In rural areas the increase was 4.08 dollars.

The increase in food prices coincided with the increase in the minimum wage.
El Salvador's national statistics-gathering body reported that residents of urban areas were paying 172.83 dollars for the main food products in June, while in the country the cost was 130.80 dollars.
