Inflation Rises in Costa Rica

After the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) between January and March this year ranged from 1.4% to 1.7%, inflation rose to 2.1% in April.

The groups with the greatest contribution to the variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April are: The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) reported that transport, rent and housing services were the main contributors to the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April.

The INEC report states that "... Of the 315 goods and services that make up the consumption basket, 47% increased in price, 42% decreased in price and 11% showed no variation.

During April, the goods and services that showed greater positive effect are: electricity service, gasoline and automobile. On the other hand, eggs, papaya and cabbage were among the main with the greatest negative effect.

In April of the last ten years, the highest year-on-year variation was presented in 2013 with 6.31%, while in 2016 the only negative year-on-year variation was registered (-0.92%).

In the second month of the year, the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index was 1.5%, below the 2.2% increase recorded in February 2018.

In April, the CPI registered a monthly variation of 0.51%, mainly explained by the prices of the Food and non-alcoholic beverages sector, and Furniture and articles for housing and service.

May 2017

The consumer price index showed a monthly variation of 0,15%, accumulating inflation so far this year of 0,70%.
