Industry Forum in Costa Rica Discusses High Cost of Energy

The 38% increase in electricity costs in the last 14 months has strongly affected the cost of production, causing a loss in competitiveness for domestic production.

A statement from the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica (CICR) reads:

Industrialists propose joint solutions to the high cost of electricity

• Employers affected by 38% increase in the electricity bill in the last 14 months.
• Cost of energy is the primary external factor hitting the competitiveness of industries.

June, 2013. In view of the sharp increases in energy prices in the country, and the costs that this represents for all Costa Ricans, the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica, CICR, is backing analysis of solutions by government leaders, the private sector, public institutions, political parties and the Legislative Assembly.

It is in this context that the CICR will be holding an Energy Forum 2013 entitled: "Status of Electricity Rates and Alternatives to Address the Energy Crisis in Costa Rica", which will be carried out on Wednesday, June 26 at 8 am at the Hotel Radisson located in Barrio Amon. Electricity Costs Affecting Competitiveness

In Costa Rica, electricity rates have doubled in the last four years, and now industrial electricity is cheaper in the U.S. and Europe.

Costa Rica’s Chamber of Industries (CICR in Spanish) is asking the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP in Spanish) to rationalize the 22.75% increase in electricity rates imposed by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).
