Industrialists in 3rd Round of Costa Rica – Colombia FTA

The Costa Rican Chamber of Industries is calling on negotiators to respect the sector’s position, and address the asymmetries between the two markets.

A statement from the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica (ICRC) reads:

This industrial sector in Third Round of FTA Talks with Colombia

• Call made for negotiators to respect the positions of companies, and reflect asymmetries.

• 66% of industrial companies are against the treaty.

October 2012. The Costa Rican industrial sector, unionized in the Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica will participate in the third round of negotiations for a trade agreement between Mexico and Colombia, which will take place from 22 to 25 October in Colombian soil.

"There is no doubt that this negotiation has become one of the most important issues within the industry’s agenda, as we reiterate that far from being complementary economies, the productive activities of both countries are in competition, but with large differences in favor of the South American country, in some respects, they are beyond comparison”, said Juan Ramon Rivera, President of the ICRC, who attend the event this week.

In the second round of FTA negotiations between the two countries, the tax offer for agricultural products did not satisfy the Central American country's representatives.

Fernando Ocampo, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade said that the offer made by Colombia does not meet the needs of Costa Rican farmers.
