Panama transporters hike container costs

Container transporters in Panama's Atlantic ports are to raise their tariffs to offset higher fuel costs, Panama's Transport Coordinator announced.

Oscar Grenald, the organization's president, said that it would in future cost US$375 to move a 20-40 feet container between the coast and Panama City, a 50 percent increase. Transportation to and from the Colón Free Zone will cost 18 percent more.

The Salvadoran Association of Cargo Transportation Companies announced they will increase fees by 20%.

Nelson Vanegas, president of the Association (known as Asetca), explained the increase as a result of higher fuel prices. Asteca gathers over 60 of all cargo transportation companies in the country.

Increase in freight anticipated in Panama

The Union of Non-Traditional Agro-exporters of Panama reported that the shipping firms are considering a new raise of 15% in the cost of freight.

Currently, freight to the United States is valued at $3,800 and for the European Union at $6,000.
Edwin Perez, president of Gantrap, indicated that this increase will be a hard hit, especially since basic products such as fertilizers were increased 16% in June and recently there was another increase of $20.
